Scott Ridgen’s ‘The Ultimate c’ diet follows the idea that there are five different types of people looking to lose weight and increase their metabolism, and as a result his dietary plan explores these different types, which are those with: carbohydrate sensitivity, metabolic syndrome, hormonal imbalance, food hypersensitivity, and liver detoxification/chronic illness.

A large focus of ‘The Ultimate Metabolism’ diet is into preparing the user to diet sensibly by following five stages of successful weight management, or the five “P”s as Ridgen coins them. These are patience, persistence, planning, positive thinking and perspiration.

The diet is designed to make the user feel as if this plan has been personally designed for them by providing case histories into these five different profiles, as well as individual diet plans dependent on which category the user assesses himself to be. As such, followers of ‘The Ultimate Metabolism’ diet can pick and choose their dietary and exercise plan, however Ridgen emphasises the importance for all dieters to apply some of the same rules to their new diet and general lifestyle.

Raw and lightly cooked vegetables, non-fat dairy products, lean meats and poultry and protein shakes are recommended food in all of Ridgen’s diet plans. The diet also recommends snacks of raw nuts and fruit. It largely discourages foods that are high in carbohydrates.

A more extensive exercise plan is applied to each individual profile, however all dieters are encouraged to partake in daily walking in order to improve their health and encourage weight loss.

Having been written by a weight-loss specialist, ‘The Ultimate Metabolism’ has been well-received by those who have had limited success with weight loss in the past, particularly those whose inability to lose weight has been because of other health complications. The program provides information specifically related to conditions such as thyroid, diabetes and heart disease.

This diet has been critiqued by making some users feel uncomfortable about their condition however, as it includes an overwhelming amount of medical terminology and typecasts individuals on the psychology of why they want to lose weight. This diet also places a lot of restrictions on users with regards what they can and cannot eat, making it difficult for the individual to eat out, instead spending a lot more time on food preparation. It additionally promotes the use of food supplements which can be expensive and discourage the dieter from eating.

The Schwarzbein Principle was initially written as a dietary plan to improve the wellbeing of sufferers of Type II Diabetes, however has been widely accepted as a way to both lose weight, and improve general wellbeing. The diet focuses on connecting dietary carbohydrates and insulin levels, and in reaching a balance between these two, users can increase their metabolism and lose weight in a fashion that is healthy and doesn’t leave the individual feeling starved.

The diet is separated into two stages. In the first stage, the user is encouraged to detox, and adopt a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, not too dissimilar to the Atkins diet. They are encouraged to give up caffeine, alcohol and artificial sweeteners, and temporarily omit carbohydrates from their diet. Particular recommended foods at this stage are meat, seafood and eggs. Butter, cream and non-starchy vegetables are also encouraged.

In the second stage of the diet, known as the maintenance stage, the user’s diet becomes more varied to include more fruit, low-fat dairy products and wholegrain. The user is encouraged to gradually add carbohydrates to their diet and monitor their weight, in order to discover the right amount that they should be eating. In this way, the Schwarzbein diet is different to the Atkins diet, in that it encourages users not to omit carbohydrates from their daily diet, especially those who are more physically active in their day-to-day life.

Aerobic exercise is strongly encouraged, as well as resistance training, as a means of increasing the body’s metabolism, and can also promote faster weight loss. Dr Diana Schwarzbein, an endocrinologist who wrote the programme additionally supports the use of nutritional supplements in modification, however these can be expensive, and should not be viewed as an alternative to eating a meal.

The Schwarzbein Principle has been praised as a useful, stable diet, particularly for those with diabetes, insulin resistance and/or hormonal imbalance. It encourages individuals to eat healthy, staple meals and is thought of as much as a lifestyle approach as a diet.

This dietary programme has been generally well received, however has been critiqued for causing its users very slow progress, before weight loss occurs, meaning that many have switched to alternative dietary plans. Dr Schwarzbein however argues that slow progress is typical of any sudden dietary change to improve the user’s health, but that as the metabolic equilibrium improves, the user will both lose weight and improve their health.

It may seem a farcical idea to assume that just by adding grapefruit juice to your diet, you could stand to lose weight. This diet however is believed to have been around since the 1930s, and in a recent study carried out in the Scripps clinic in San Diego, clinical trials were carried out which would suggest just that, and that rather than cutting the foods you enjoy out of your diet, adding this fruity beverage to your daily routine could in fact help you lose pounds.

The Grapefruit diet has been noted as being effective because the grapefruit acts as a catalyst to burning fat and therefore encouraging weight loss. Dr Fujioka of the Scripps clinic in carrying out a 12 week study on 100 men and women, found that just by eating half an unsweetened grapefruit for breakfast, lunch and dinner, on average participants lost 3 and a half pounds, some many more than this, because the chemical properties of grapefruit (low glycemic index, high fibre, and low calorie content) reduce insulin levels.

The diet encourages users not to eliminate anything from their regular diet, and in fact encourages them to eat as many helpings of meat, salad and vegetables as possible. It does however suggest a limitation on caffeine, which can counter the effect that grapefruit juice causes, in slowing down the insulin levels in your body, as well as foods that are high in sugar or starch, such as desserts and bread.

The diet is suggested as a short-term plan, between 7 and 21 days, with exercise considered as not strictly necessary.

Grapefruits are high in vitamin C and beta-carotene, which makes including this fruit in your diet beneficial and nutritious towards a healthy lifestyle. Eating half a grapefruit prior to your meal can also make you feel fuller, encouraging you to eat less at dinner time.

Some criticism has come of the diet however in suggesting that there is not sufficient evidence to suggest that the effects of grapefruit are more special than any other fruit or vegetable, and that weight loss is primarily caused by fluids and not fats, which means that it is very easy to gain weight again once the user comes off the diet. A great idea then if you’re hoping to squeeze into that dress for next week’s bash, but not suitable as a long-term diet plan for serious, sustained weight loss.

‘The Cheater’s Diet’ is a dietary program which has helped over 15,000 people lose weight, and has been so popular because of its emphases upon helping its users both maintaining a high metabolism, and helping them to not become fatigued by the dietary boredom that many diets create.

The diet focuses on a Mediterranean style of eating, with low calorie foods encouraged throughout the week, however with room for its users to ‘cheat’ and indulge in normally forbidden foods such as chocolate cake, in moderation at the weekends. Dr Rivas who wrote the program emphasised that it is important for dieters to understand the concept of ‘controlled cheating’, whereby they may enjoy fatty foods, but appreciate that they may need to place some restraint on the quantity of their intake.

‘The Cheater’s Diet’ can be a short or long term diet plan, and encourages its users to eat three small meals a day, and two snacks. The foods that are suggested during the week are lean meats, seafood, salads, berries and protein bars, with the dieter being able to enjoy other foods at the weekend. The diet plan provides sample menus with a low calorie intake to give the user an idea of the foods that they should be eating.

The diet further encourages its users to take part in as much physical exercise as possible in order to boost metabolism levels. Particular activities that are recommended are walking, washing the car, and gardening. The diet has consequently proven popular as users with a busy lifestyle do not feel pressurised into joining a rigorous training programme, and can increase their metabolism by adopting a cheap and easy exercise routine.

Some criticism has come of this diet in that the calorie intake suggested for users has been considered much too low and therefore neither suitable for men, or women with a very active lifestyle. Additionally, the diet encourages the user to use artificial sweeteners and other food supplements which many have found have not been effective to those trying to lose weight.

Praise has come of the diet however in being a life-style approach which doesn’t involve the user giving up the foods that they like. Dr Rivas argues that there are psychological benefits derived from allowing the dieter to continue indulging in foods that they would normally eat, if in limitation, and that this in the long-term can promote successful weight loss.
